Roger Reynolds discusses his first encounter with Nancarrow and his music 4:21

Having first heard faint and distorted recordings of Nancarrow’s Studies for Player Piano in Ann Arbor during a Merce Cunningham Dance Company rehearsal, I was captivated and sought to connect with him. I was not successful. Then, in the mid-1970s, a friend at the American Information Agency in Mexico City invited us to visit and to interview Conlon whom he had befriended. Nancarrow had had no experience whatsoever in explaining his music to others, so the process was grueling and fascinating at the same time. These videotaped remarks are taken from a fine DVD about this remarkable man.
