Audio Updated 4 March 2026 Ambages (1965) 8:10 complete This early work was my response to partner Karen's request that I compose something in the nature of Debussy's Syrinx. Inevitably, who I was then and how I still work now led to a longer and more intricate piece that concerns "what belongs to what?" When does a phrase begin? When does it end? The constant ambiguity of such questions is at the center of the piece which she premiered at the Rockerfeller Foundation's Villa Serbelloni on Lake Como.
