...b.a... (2018)
(Flute and composer, and conductor, and...)

by Roger Reynolds

Flutist (and composer, and conductor, and …) Robert Aitken has been friend and colleague for many decades. From our earliest encounters in Rome, when he and my partner Karen were in Severino Gazzelloni’s master class, we traded musical collaborations, magnificent meals and drinks, intersecting friendships (Toru Takemitsu among them), and satisfying conversations late into the nights. I had known, of course, that Bob had the outrageous “commute” required by his residence in Toronto and his position as Professor of Flute in Freiburg, so when I was asked, on rather short notice, to provide a tribute piece, I adapted a work for three piccolos from “… brain ablaze...she howled aloud” for the occasion. It was premiered by Wolfgang Wendel, Jan Junker, and Georg Kapp at Musikhochschule Freiburg, Kammermusiksaal, 16th of July 2004.
