The first classical music DVD -- WATERSHED

For 5.1 surround sound systems...
but also for anyone with a stereo output DVD player or a DVD-equipped computer.
NTSC format (U.S., Canada, most of Asia, including Japan).

From Richard Zvonar's article in Surround Professional Magazine, Vol. 1, No. 3, April 1999:

Surround's Watershed Event

"[regarding the WATERSHED DVD] Most important, the spatial element is integral to the conception of each piece and is not simply imposed as a final production effect. For Roger Reynolds, this is expressed as a synergy between background (he holds degrees in both Engineering Physics and Music Composition), 30 years of experience working with spatialization issues, and the considering of each particular situation in light of a variety of tools. As in all art making, there is a kind of 'alchemy' going on wherein the totality of the composer's knowledge and experience boils down to produce a richly nuanced and authentic result."

From the January 1999 MODE release:

A Watershed in Sonic Experience

"The first music DVD designed to totally utilize the medium's full 5-channel capability in an exhilarating display of moving sound and images."

"...Reynolds is internationally recognized as a pioneer in the creative use of multichannel sound. Now, with the pathbreaking potential of 5-channel DVD sound, the impact of his work can be fully experienced at home."

From Paul Griffiths's DVD booklet essay:

The Unseen and the Scene

"Watershed IV is a piece in the most visually alive musical medium: the percussion solo. More than that, it is played, in this world première performance, by a musician who is wonderful to watch as well as to hear: Steven Schick.... What he and Reynolds create here is drama that is also music."

Reynolds and his collaborators Peter Otto, spatialization, and Steven Schick, percussionist, joined with AIX Media Group, Inc. (Mark Waldrep) of Los Angeles and Mode Records (Brian Brandt) of New York to produce a pathbreaking Digital Video Disc entitled WATERSHED. It includes video imagery of the première performance of Watershed IV, as well as video synthesis by pioneer Ed Emshwiller for the multimedia version of Eclipse. These two works plus an excerpt from the computer aspect of The Red Act Arias are available in full 5-channel sound [Dolby Digital 5.1]. In addition, interview/discussion/demonstration materials involving Otto, Reynolds, and Schick place this unique project in perspective.

The technical approach to real-time spatialization in the Watershed pieces III and IV is constantly evolving, a response to changing technological resources which is planned and implemented by the TRAnSiT group at UCSD's Center for Research in Computing and the Arts (CRCA).
